The Importance of Lighting in Interior Design with STUDIOPICA

If you ask the team at STUDIOPICA, lighting is one of the most important elements in interior design. Good lighting can change and transform a space. We love to layer the lighting in a single space by choosing fixtures of varying heights and installations—think sconces, a chandelier, and table or floor lamps mixed in with feature lights. We will often use light and shade to make a room feel comfortable but also dramatic and atmospheric. If we want to highlight artwork on a wall, we will install a picture light to hit the artwork but in combination with a darker area around – this then draws the eye to the painting. We focus on illuminating most living spaces, think living rooms, family rooms and bedrooms, by lamp light. Light emanating from a lower level in the room is much more inviting and flattering than harsh lighting from above.

Light temperature is at the top of our list of importance. 2700–3000k is most often used in residential design where 2700k is the warmest temperature and the preference in our firm. There is a little chart on every light bulb box that calls out the color temperature. Make sure your bulbs are around 2700k and dimmable. We specify dimmers on almost all light fixtures as they are crucial to creating ambiance in a space.

We look at decorative lighting as the jewelry of a room and a great way to introduce scale and interesting finishes or textures. There are a myriad of lighting vendors these days and the options are endless. Some of our firm's go to sources are Visual Comfort, The Urban Electric Co, Apparatus Studio, and Arteriors.

Have fun with the lighting in your home and remember that layered lighting and color temperature are everything!
